2010 Calendar Historic home rehabs, new rain gardens and restored playgrounds – you name it – we have a full schedule planned for you at 2010 Historic Green in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, March 10th to 20th. A downloadable calendar of our education events is below and will fill you in on the various opportunities, demonstration sites, lectures and other event venues.

NOTE: Daylight Savings Time begins on the 14th, so events in the second week of the google calendar currently appear an hour off, but will be correct once DST begins.

Weatherization of Historic Homes: Bill Robinson

This session will cover approaches to optimize energy efficiency in historic homes without dramatically changing the essence of the historic building. The session will cover the basic components and methods of improving energy efficiency, as well as architectural features, opportunities and road blocks specifically found in historic houses. Window modifications, insulation options and the purpose of energy audits will be covered at a local site in the Holy Cross neighborhood.

Historic Reconstruction Evaluation: John Hanson

This session will introduce strategies for evaluation of historic properties slated for reconstruction. Site evaluation methods, material evaluation, and hands on historic research methods will be covered. Restoration construction methods and carpentry techniques will be covered on site. Specific topics will be based on the site and state of reconstruction.

Sustainable Building from a Contractor’s View: Ryan Haugaard

This session will cover green building techniques that are specific to the contractor’s trade. The development of the design and the interaction between contractor and architect will be discussed. A tour of site under construction will be the backdrop to discuss issues that are unique to a sustainable design and the contractor’s role in the process. Site evaluation, materials reuse, recycling materials and use of historic elements in the construction process will be covered. Specific topics will be based on the site and state of reconstruction.

From the Boots of the Builder: Bill Hole

This session will introduce historic preservation reconstruction methods from the view of the preservation tradesman. Recreating and repairing windows and siding; understanding and identifying regional and historically relevant materials; preserving architectural details to be used after reconstruction will be covered. Specific topics will be based on the site and state of reconstruction.

5200 Dauphine- Cultural Heritage, Longevity and Sustainability: Ryan Evans, Jeremy Knoll and Wayne Troyer

This session will explain the project design objectives at 5200 Dauphine, especially cultural heritage, longevity and sustainability in the design of new construction. The Preservation Resource Center and Holy Cross Neighborhood Association will introduce the project, explaining the purpose and intended use. Wayne Troyer, Jeremy Knoll and Ryan Evans will give an overview on the philosophical objectives for the project and talk about the design of the building. Q&A to follow.

Rain Gardens and Sustainable Storm Water Management Options for the Home Owner: Jennifer Gunby

This session will cover the purpose and construction of rain gardens as part of a sustainable stormwater management plan. Rain gardens are shallow depressions planted with native vegetation that reduce stormwater runoff and filters pollutants before runoff enters local waterways. The session will cover local vegetation used, construction, and other green storm water management options. Specific topics will be based on the site and state of reconstruction.
