In early 2011, Ryan Evans and Jeremy Knoll were meeting quarterly with a group of other young leaders of different building professionals organizations (Architecture for Humanity, Engineers Without Borders, USGBC Emerging Professionals, and Historic Green). The EWB had been approached by a neighborhood activist who hoped to find help in creating a water catchment system for a garden they wanted to create at the corner of Linwood and Benton. The group decided to split this task up among the organizations, and each take on a piece of the effort.

The USGBC Emerging Professionals hosted a summer-long design competition, based on the scope that had been agreed to through monthly meetings between Neighborhood Association representatives, the Hope Center (501(c)3 property owner), and the group of KC green building organizations (represented by Jeremy, Ryan, Brennan, Will, and Kate). At the end of the summer, the winning design was selected by a group of neighborhood stakeholders and green building organization representatives. The Engineers Without Borders helped to assemble a team from Kiewit Power and Construction who were willing to donate a design/install of a rainwater cistern, and participated heavily in a technical review hosted at Historic Green’s offices at Project Living Proof.

A technical review was used to resolve the details of the design to the liking of the community as well as the construction and design experts who would be building it. Fall and Winter of 2011 were used to work through remaining logistics and fundraising, and by Spring of 2012, a team of sponsors, project leaders, and volunteers had been identified. Over several weeks between April and early June, Kiewit Engineers installed the 2,500 gallon rainwater cistern, LaFarge Concrete/Cement provided 20 yards of their low carbon concrete (a mix that uses 30% less carbon than typical concrete, 55% recycled material, and zero coal energy in manufacture), which JE Dunn Construction provided finishers for. JE Dunn also did a gentle site grading just before Kiewit returned to the site to install “drain tile” (a 6″ diameter underground drainage pipe to collect rainwater from the sidewalks on the site), which had to be installed before Lafarge and JE Dunn could install the sidewalks.

With sidewalks and rainwater collection system complete, a group of around 50 community and professional organization volunteers gathered throughout the first Saturday of June to install the first phase of the community garden, giving new life to an overgrown lot. Future phases will depend on what the community feels they are ready to take on, as it was critical to them that we only build what they knew they could maintain at each stage. We will be checking in regularly with their representatives and planning a future addition as soon as Fall of 2012 (bulbs and several smaller planters) and Spring of 2013 (vegetable garden, butterfly structure, solar lights, signage, more small planters).

Description:

Join Historic Green for a special evening of delicious New Orleans-style food, wonderful music, great company, while experiencing a green historic building in Kansas City!

As our annual Kansas City fundraiser, we’ll be serving up Jambalaya and Red Beans and Rice to support the work we do in providing professional and service-learning construction programs in several communities around the nation. This year’s event will be hosted at Project Living Proof near the Anita Gorman Discovery Center (47th and Troost).

Suggested donation of $30 per person or $50 per couple. Every $1,000 raised will make it possible for us to weatherize a home from top to bottom; reducing the monthly utility costs for the residents we serve by as much as 60%; substantially reducing asthma attacks and respiratory problems resulting from poor indoor air quality; and teaching a new generation of builders valuable (and replicable) lessons about green construction in older homes and neighborhoods.

Your presence will be truly appreciated, and we look forward to sharing our progress and vision for 2012 with you.
